The 2018-19 UEFA Champions League semi-finals get under way on Tuesday when Tottenham Hotspur host Ajax in the first leg of a tie few would have predicted this late in the tournament.

Wednesday then sees action at the Camp Nou as tournament favourites Barcelona meet last year's beaten finalists Liverpool.

Neither tie has a heavy favourite to qualify for the final, but the bookies are backing both home sides to prevail this week.

The key for Spurs and Barcelona will be trying to avoid conceding any away goals, as they can be so crucial at this stage of the tournament.

Ronaldo, since Messi's two goals against Bayern that year, has scored 11 quarterfinal goals, three semifinal goals, and two goals in the final.

However, this season alone, Messi has created two goals and scored six in 10 Champions League appearances. This is an attacking efficiency of a goal scored or created once for every 97 minutes he has been on the pitch.

Messi's strike rate in Europe is impressive, yes — but not when you compare him to Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has created three goals and scored 15 in 10 Champions League outings. That's an attacking efficiency of a goal scored or created once for every 50 minutes he has been on the pitch.

In European competition, Ronaldo has been twice as productive as Messi has this season.

There is no argument to be had — when it comes to the latter stages of their careers, it is Ronaldo and Ronaldo alone who has been excelling in the big games on the grandest of stages.

Just last week, Ronaldo's jaw-dropping overhead bicycle kick could see him get crowned with the goal of the season award. It was a highlight-reel strike that required excellent gymnastics, athleticism, bodily coordination, timing, ingenuity, and execution.

The goal, as you can see, is one to remember. But what made it all the more extraordinary was that it was struck in the first leg of Real Madrid's quarterfinal Champions League clash against Juventus. It was the second of two goals he scored that night in Italy to help his club on its way to the Champions League semifinal thanks to a superb 3-0 win.

That whole week, the whole buzz in sports pages across the world was how good Ronaldo was. In the second leg, Real squandered its three goal cushion and allowed Juventus back into the game, but in the closing moments Ronaldo stepped up and broke Juve's hearts by rifling in a penalty kick.

Real won by a 4-3 aggregate score and has its sights on a third successive Champions League title — all because of Ronaldo.

But what about Messi?

Messi messed up on the big stage, as his goals were nowhere to be found when FC Barcelona needed him the most.

Barcelona had beaten AS Roma 4-1 in the first leg of its Champions League quarterfinal match last week. But Roma fought back with an unmatched fury on Tuesday, beating Barca 3-0 on the night and squeaking through to the semis thanks to an away goal victory on a 4-4 aggregate score.

Roma had knocked Barcelona out — but the story would have been so different had Messi managed to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and score. He failed to do so, missed a golden opportunity to score from close range in the 86th minute, and Barcelona got knocked out of the tournament.

Messi is a once-in-a-generation type player and, like Eurosport's editor Adams noted earlier, he may well be "the better player."

But, while Messi fails on the big stage, it is Ronaldo who succeeds — that much is clear.

Leonardo Bonucci Guides Cristiano Ronaldo-less Juventus Past Cagliari | Bleacher Report

Juventus moved closer to winning their eighth Serie A title in a row on Tuesday, beating Cagliari 2-0 on the road without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo. Leonardo Bonucci scored the opening goal on his 250th league appearance for the club:

The Bianconeri were without a host of injured players, including Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic, but managed Cagliari handily. Bonucci headed home the first goal of the match off a Federico Bernardeschi corner in the first half.

Moise Kean continued his scorching form after the break, doubling the lead and securing the win.

The match was marred by racist chants aimed at scorer Kean, as reported by Italian football writer Chloe Beresford:

Cagliari had won three in a row at home and only lost twice in Sardinia this season prior to Tuesday's contest, but Juventus' sheer quality was too much to handle.

Juve Must Lean on Bernardeschi if Ronaldo Can't Face Ajax

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri fielded a surprisingly strong XI on Tuesday, given the rash of injuries the team is dealing with and what's on the schedule in the coming weeks. The likes of Bonucci, Bernardeschi, Miralem Pjanic and Alex Sandro all started, in what turned out to be another routine win for the defending champions.

With no Ronaldo or Mandzukic to aim crosses at ―Juventus' most effective strategy this season―the Bianconeri were forced to find other ways to score. They eventually got the opener off a set-piece situation, courtesy of a superb corner from Bernardeschi:

The former Fiorentina man can be a frustrating player to watch at times, as consistency eludes him. He was phenomenal in the 3-0 comeback win over Atletico Madrid, but even in that match he had short stretches where he seemingly couldn't get anything right.

The same pattern played out on Tuesday. Bernardeschi lost the ball in a promising position several times, but he also created chances out of thin air, went close with a great strike and could have scored if Kean didn't get in the way:

Fede's best moment of the night ... and Moise Kean gets in the way of it.

His movement and ability to play on either wing or through the centre are his best assets and make him exceptionally difficult to defend. Atletico found that out the hard way, and if Ronaldo misses Juventus' April 10 date with Ajax in the Champions League, Allegri should look to unleash the 25-year-old once again.

Others may be more consistent with the ball at their feet, but no one can break open a contest with a moment of genius―or madness―quite like Bernardeschi. If Ronaldo can't be the focal point of the team due to injury, the Italy international should take his place.

What's Next?

Juventus host rivals AC Milan in a marquee clash on Saturday, while Cagliari host SPAL on Sunday.

#EFFPresser: Malema on #GangsterState, Alex Shutdown and white farmers

EFF leader Julius Malema used his usual press briefings to announce legal action against a former member, the disruption of the book launch of Gangster State and the ongoing Alexandra.

Malema addressed the media on Wednesday and
reiterated his party's finances are not being mismanaged and promised to sue a former EFF member for R1 million over what he calls defamatory comments.

He denied accusations made by now former EFF member and MP Thembinkosi Rawula.

He said his lawyers were in the process of issuing court papers on Rawula and has promised to “clean him out”.

Rawula accused Malema and his deputy Floyd Shivambu of abusing the party’s finances and refusing to open up the party’s financial books.

He also said Malema had told EFF members in a meeting that the party had accepted money from VBS bank.

Rawula has been accused of being embittered because he has not been included in the party’s list for Parliament.

Malema said these claims were untrue and said Parliament and the IEC would never provide funds to the party if it did not have proper financial records.

“We reiterate that our finical standing as an organisation is at its best, demonstrated by the fact that parliament, legislatures and the IEC have all given EFF money for five years. We have noted with keen interest that there are people who because they did not find expression in the EFF final list to parliament, have decided to break rank,” said Malema.

Gangster State

Malema labelled the disruption of the book launch of Gangster State as "thuggery" and "anti-intellectual".

He was commenting following Tuesday night’s disruption of the book launch of
Gangster State; Unravelling Ace Magashule's Web of Capture at Exclusive Books in Sandton.

The event was cut short after a group of people who were dressed in ANC T-shirts disrupted the launch and proceeded to tear pages from the book.

The book is written by journalist Pieter Louis Myburgh, centres on Magashule's alleged corrupt activities while he was the premier of the Free State and the chairperson of the ANC in the province.

Malema said there is no purpose in burning books that one disagrees with.

"To go into the extent of going into book shops that is anti-intellectualism. It's anti-intellectuals who do such a thing. You have to read people you disagree with in order to understand where they are coming from," said Malema.

He claimed the commotion at the book launch was orchestrated by the ANC and that its leadership was aware of it.

"The new dawn is now burning books. It is the same new dawn that released a statement on Ace," said Malema.

Alex protests

Malema accused the ANC of being behind the protests in Alexandra township. He said the issues faced by residents at the historic township were not manufactured by the DA, but by the ANC who failed to deliver services.

“Alex protest is an ANC protest. It is an ANC campaign strategy and it will backfire on them because it will spread into the municipalities that they are governing. Before they know it, this country will be on fire. There is no mess created by the DA in Alex. The DA found that mess there and they did not do anything about it, that's the difference. Where is the money of Alexandra Renewal? Who is responsible to answer? Perks Tau and the Alex Mafia,” he said.

White Farmers

Malema said white farmers should stay in South Africa but said he would not beg them to do so. The EFF has supported the expropriation of land without compensation and this view has often been received with condemnation.

“White farmers should stay in SA but I will not beg them. I will not glorify white privilege, we are all valuable to the growth of the economy. No-one is going to destroy any white farm, no white person is going to be killed or beaten up under the EFF government,” said Malema.

Cristiano Ronaldo claims the former U.K. "Celebrity Big Brother" star who publicly accused him of emotionally abusing and threatening her is lying ... insisting he's never even met the woman.

As we previously reported, fashion model Jasmine Lennard went off on social media this week -- claiming she had secretly dated Ronaldo for a decade and was subjected to all sorts of disgusting behavior, including death threats.

Lennard even posted audio clips she claimed captured Ronaldo making offensive comments -- but there's one huge problem, Ronaldo claims the voice on the tapes is NOT him.

"Mr. Ronaldo has no specific recollection of meeting Ms. Lennard 10 years ago or at any point," his legal team tells TMZ Sports.

"He has not had a relationship with her and he has not had any contact with her, whether in the last 18 months as Ms Lennard suggests, or otherwise."

"The voice notes posted by Ms Lennard on social media are not of Mr. Ronaldo. Mr. Ronaldo will take appropriate legal action in due course."

Lennard has since deleted her entire Twitter account -- including the voice messages.

Mu-ming Poo is head of the Division of Neurobiology, Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at University of California, Berkeley, California, USA. He is also director of the Institute of Neuroscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, China.

To all lab members:

Over the past several months, it has become clear to me that if there is no drastic change in the lab, Poo lab will soon cease to be a productive, first-rate lab that you chose to join in the first place. Lab progress reports over the past six months have clearly shown the lack of progress in most projects. One year ago, when we first moved to Berkeley, I expressed clearly to everyone my expectation from each one in the lab. The most important thing is what I consider to be sufficient amount of time and effort in the lab work. I mentioned that about 60 hr working time per week is what I consider the minimal time an average successful young scientist in these days has to put into the lab work. There may be a few rare lucky fellows like Florian, who had two Nature papers in his sleeve already, can enjoy life for a while and still get a job offer from Harvard. No one else in the lab has Florian's luxury to play around.

Thus I am imposing strict rules in the lab from now on:

1. Every one works at least 50 hr a week in the lab (e.g., 8+ hr a day, six days a week). This is by far lower than what I am doing every day and throughout most of my career. You may be smarter or do not want to be as successful, but I am not asking you to match my time in the lab.

2. By working, I mean real bench work. This does not include surfing on the computer and sending and receiving e-mails for non-scientific matters unrelated to your work (you can do this after work in the lab or at home), and excessive chatting on nonscientific matters. No long lunch break except special occasions. I suggest that everyone puts in at least 6 hr concentrated bench work and 2+ hr reading and other research-related activity each day. Reading papers and books should be done mostly after work. More time can be spent on reading, literature search and writing during working hours when you are ready for writing a paper.

3. I must be informed in person by e-mail (even in my absence from the lab) when you are absent from the lab for a whole day or more. Inform me early your vacation plan. Taking more than 20 working days out of one year is the maximum to me. In fact, none of you are reporting any vacation and sick leave on your time sheet (against the university rule, although I have been signing the sheets), but you know roughly how many days you were not here.

On the whole, I understand and accept the fact that you may not fulfill the above requirements all the time, due to health reasons, occasional personal business. But if you do not like to follow the rules because it is simply a matter of choice of life style, I respect your choice but suggest you start making plans immediately and leave the lab by the end of January 31. I will do my best to help you to locate a lab to transfer or to find a job.

If you do accept the conditions I describe above, I am happy to continue to provide my best support to your work, hopefully more than I have done in the past. I will review the progress of everyone in the lab by the end of June of 2002. I expect everyone to have made sufficient progress in the research so that a good paper is in sight (at least to the level of J. Neuroscience). If you cannot meet this goal at that time, I will have to ask you to prepare to leave my lab by the end of August.

Barcelona win La Liga: Brilliant Lionel Messi turns attention to Champions League

When Lionel Messi placed fifth in last year's Ballon d'Or, he was as classy in his response as he is on the field.

But anyone who has watched him play this season would suggest the snub started a fire in his belly, with his exceptional form having allowed Barcelona to cruise to a second successive Liga title - not to mention the final of the Copa del Rey, and the last four of the Champions League.

The Argentine turns 32 in the summer, but he's showing no signs of slowing down, with 34 goals and 15 assists putting him top of both charts in La Liga.

Messi may have suggested that he misses the domestic competition of Cristiano Ronaldo, with his former Real Madrid rival having moved to Juventus last summer, but the Portuguese's departure clearly hasn't affected the No.10's motivation.

The Barcelona skipper has helped his side dominate La Liga from start to finish - the Catalans have been top since week 14.

Messi himself is set to clinch the Trofeo Pichichi for the third successive season, with Luis Suarez and Karim Benzema, on 21 goals, some way behind his tally of 34.

In the race for the European Golden Shoe, only Kylian Mbappe, with 30 strikes, is anywhere near him as he eyes up a record sixth prize.

"It is always important to improve individually, but this is in light of the collective," Messi said earlier this season.

"It is only important if you can help your team and be more successful on the pitch."

He's certainly done that. The forward's goals alone have been worth 16 points for Barcelona - the difference between the Blaugrana topping the La Liga table rather than trailing Atletico Madrid in second.

He's been directly involved in 56 per cent of their 86 goals scored - with particular highlights his hat-trick and two assists in the 5-0 win at Levante, and his hat-trick and assist in the 4-2 victory against Sevilla.

But it would be harsh to ignore the fact that Barcelona have been so strong in Messi's absence, too.

The 5-1 victory over Real Madrid in October was a turning point in the season, even at that early point in the season.

"[Messi] is the best in the world, always a plus," Suarez said after the win, in which he scored Barcelona's first non-Messi hat-trick in the Clasico since Romario.

"But what we've done is shown the level of football this team is capable of. We're behind the manager and we love the club."

His comments came amidst plenty of doubts over Valverde's future, an unspectacular yet reliable figure in the Barcelona dugout.

While the Blaugrana stuck by their man, their victory in the Clasico spelled the end for Julen Lopetegui at Real Madrid after just 14 games in charge.

As chaos continued to surround Los Blancos, Barcelona's sparkling season continued to put them to shame.

While Valverde's side target three trophies, Madrid have now had three coaches, with Zinedine Zidane returning after Santiago Solari's failed attempt to resurrect their season.

Barcelona now lead the all-time head-to-head in El Clasico, and this season became the first Liga side to win four in a row at the Bernabeu.

It will be all that bit sweeter to the Camp Nou faithful that, while setting Spain alight this season, they've also made a mockery of their biggest rivals.

"They are paying the price for thinking that they could get results without Cristiano Ronaldo," Fabio Capello said of Madrid earlier this season.

In fact, only Benzema has stepped up for the 2016-17 La Liga champions this season, who, as a result, are set for a massive overhaul this summer.

Ronaldo has set his own records this season, most recently by becoming the first player to win the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A.

But after crashing out in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and Coppa Italia, Ronaldo has only a league title - and the Supercoppa Italiana - to show for his debut season in Turin.

Messi and Barcelona, meanwhile, could be just a third of the way through their trophy return this season, and that is primarily due to their magical Argentine.

"I would like to have an assortment of words, but what can I say about Leo?" Valverde asked the press earlier this season.

"He is breaking all the records, and those he will still beat. He makes the public always expect something special from him, and he delivers it.

"We know what he is, what he means from a global point of view and we are enjoying that."

Champions of Spain is a fantastic and well-deserved achievement, but Champions of Europe is the title Barcelona crave again - and Messi is in the form to deliver it.

Poker is the name given to a variety of card games in which players’ hands are ranked by the cards available to them, whether held individually or shared by multiple players. Different poker games vary in the number of cards dealt, the hand rankings used, the number of hidden and shared cards available, the number of betting rounds offered and the betting procedures followed.

Who wins?

Typically, the winner of each hand of poker is the player that holds the best ranking hand when all cards are shown – this is known as “showdown” – or the player that makes the last uncalled bet, thus winning without needing to reach showdown.

There are different rules for the different types of games. With community card games such as Hold’em and Omaha, everybody shares part of the hand, while in Stud games each person is dealt cards, some of which are hidden and some of which are face up. For Draw games each person is dealt their own cards but can exchange some or all of them for new ones, and in High/Lo Split games the pot is divided between the best ‘high’ and ‘low’ hands.

Poker games typically feature a forced bet, such as the Big Blind and Small Blind in Hold’em and Omaha or the Antes and Bring-In in Stud. These forced bets comprise the starting pot in any given hand of poker, which is the first incentive players have to win the hand. Action arising from the subsequent rounds of betting further increases the size of the pot.

Dealing Cards and Betting Rounds

After any initial cards are dealt, players are usually called upon to act in turn, moving clockwise around the table.

Each player can usually take one of the following actions when it is their turn to act:

• Check – players can only check when there is no bet during the current round, and the act of checking passes the action clockwise to the next person in the hand. If all active players check, the round is considered complete.


• Bet – players may bet if no other players have bet during the current round.


• Fold – players who fold forfeit their cards and cannot win or act again during the current hand.


• Call – players can call if other players have bet during the current round; this requires the calling player to match the highest bet made.


• Raise – players may raise if other players have bet during the current round; this requires the raising player to match the highest bet made, and make a subsequent bet.

On each betting round, betting continues until every player has either matched the bets made or folded (if no bets are made, the round is complete when every player has checked). When the betting round is completed, the next dealing/betting round begins, or the hand is complete.

Additional cards, both hidden and visible, may be dealt to players after each betting round has finished, changing the best poker hand that each player may make with the cards available to them.

Showdown

Once the last bet or raise has been called during the final round of betting, showdown occurs; the remaining active players must show or “declare” their hands, and the player(s) with the best ranking hand(s) win the pot.

Players often show their hands in order, rather than all at the same time. Multiple players can share a single pot, with the pot divided in different ways depending on the game rules and how each player’s hand ranks against their opponents.

Betting Limits

Betting limits refer to the amount players may open and raise. Typically, poker games are of the following limit types; no limit, pot limit or fixed limit.

• No Limit – in poker games with a no limit betting structure, each player can bet or raise by any amount up to and including their full stack (the total number of chips they possess at any given time) in any betting round, whenever it is their turn to act.


• Pot Limit – in poker games with a pot limit betting structure, each player can bet or raise by any amount up to and including the size of the total pot at that time.


• Fixed Limit – in poker games with a fixed limit betting structure, each player can choose to call, bet or raise, but only by a fixed amount. The fixed amount for any given betting round is set in advance.

<p>A 1-0 win over Levante on Saturday wrapped up yet another La Liga title for Barcelona. Barcelona leads Atletico Madrid by 9 points with three games remaining and could still be tied on points. However, Barcelona won the season’s head-to-head with Atletico which would be the tie-breaker.</p>
<p>It is Barcelona’s eighth &nbsp;La Liga title in the last 11 seasons, a testament to the team’s incredible consistency. Real Madrid won the league in 2011/12 and 2016/17 and Atletico in 2013/14. On all three occasions, Barcelona finished as runners-up. In fact, only once since 2003/04 have Barcelona failed to finish in the top two – 2007/08 when they finished 3^rd.</p>
<p>Arguably the only era that beats Barcelona’s decade-plus run was Real Madrid’s&nbsp;8 La Liga titles in 9 seasons in the 60s.</p>
<p>Barcelona still trails Real Madrid in total La Liga titles – 26 to 33 – but the gap over the three decades has been cut by more than half.</p>

<p>In 1988/89, when Johan Cruyff became manager, Barcelona had won the title 10 times to Real Madrid’s 26. Barcelona has since added 16 titles to Real Madrid’s 9.</p>

<p>Both Messi and Suarez missed games through injury but neither long-term. Lionel Messi missed two games through injury and he was rested in another. So far, he has clocked 2,529 La Liga minutes this season.</p>
<p>Suarez missed just one league game, a knee problem, and another through suspension. Suarez La Liga minutes total 2,829 to date.</p>
<p><strong>#2 Ter Stegen and the defense</strong></p>
<p>Statistically, it was not Barcelona’s best season defensively, but sometimes stats lie.</p>
<p>Goalkeeper Marc-Andr&eacute; ter Stegen&nbsp;has played every minute of the league season so far – 3,150 minutes – conceding 32 goals and recording 16 clean sheets. What the stats don’t show is the number of times the German goalkeeper pulled of magnificent saves just when Barcelona needed&nbsp;it most.</p>

<p>Eight of the 32 goals were conceded in two games – four against Real Betis and the same number against Villarreal.</p>
<p>After the 4-3 home loss to Real Betis in November, Barcelona allowed just 3 goals in the next 9 league games and recorded 6 clean sheets. The nine-game run steadied the Barcelona ship and laid the foundation for future success.</p>
<p><strong>#3 Ernesto Valverde – Mr. Steady</strong></p>
<p>In May 2017, Ernesto Valverde signed on as Barcelona’s coach but just over two months into his time the Camp Nou was shaken by the departure of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain.</p>
<p>Valverde took the shock move in stride and over the last two seasons, he has shown time and time again that he is a manager who can maintain his focus, stay calm and keep his eye on the prize.</p>
<p>His approach is not dissimilar to former Real Madrid and Spain Coach Vicente Del Bosque – the players are the stars and the job of the coach is to keep things on an even keel and avoid as much of the media limelight as possible.</p>
<p>Barcelona’s default approach is still very much possession-based but Valverde has not been afraid to introduce a more direct approach to Barcelona’s play or occasionally to sit deeper in defense and look to counter.</p>
<p>The 55-year-old was rewarded with a contract extension in February of this year that runs to June 2022. According to French publication L’Equipe, Valverde’s new deal makes him the second-highest paid manager in the game with a salary of nearly $27M a year.</p>

<p>It’s no secret that just many new signings don’t work out. But three of the new recruits that arrived at the Camp Nou last summer have made a positive difference.</p>
<p>French defender Cl&eacute;ment Lenglet was not named to France’s 2018 World Cup but it did not stop Barcelona signing the 23-year-old center back from Sevilla for $50M. Ironically, when France World Cup-winner Samuel Umtiti injured a knee in September it was Lenglet who stepped forward.</p>
<p>Over two spells Umtiti missed 16 games and Lenglet, his replacement, was excellent.</p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong>Arthur Melo arrived from Gr&ecirc;mio for $45M and his possession/metronome-type style fitted perfectly with the Barcelona-way.&nbsp; The&nbsp;23-year-old has many great seasons ahead of him at the Camp Nou, I suspect.</p>

<p>Just a few weeks ago, if you mentioned the name Arturo Vidal to Barcelona fans, the reaction, at best, would have been one of disappointment. His combative and energetic style had Vidal looking like a square peg trying to bludgeon a round hole.</p>
<p>But then it all suddenly things clicked and over the last few games, Vidal has been excellent. This is the 8^th consecutive domestic title won by Vidal after spells with Juventus and Bayern Munich.</p>
<p><strong>#6&nbsp;</strong><strong>Real's failure to launch, Atletico lacked staying power</strong></p>
<p>For the second straight season, Barcelona’s rivals were unable to maintain a consistent and season-long challenge. Real Madrid’s league challenge failed to launch and Atletico suffered by only taking three points from Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Sevilla in 5 games.</p>
<p>The final gap from champions to runners up in 2017/18 was 14 points and it may be less by the end of the season. However, it doesn’t change the conclusion that Barcelona was head and shoulders above the rest.</p>
<p>Barca's&nbsp;record against the teams currently sitting 2^nd through 5^th was played 7, won 6, drawn 1, goals scored 19, goals allowed 7, points 19 out of a possible 21. The only blemish was a 1-1&nbsp;draw against Atletico in November.</p>
<p><strong>What’s next?</strong></p>
<p>On Wednesday, Barcelona is at home to Liverpool in the first leg of the semi-final of the Champions League. The return match is on May 7 at Anfield, Liverpool. The winners play either Tottenham Hotspur or Ajax on June 1 at the Wanda Metropolitano, the home of Atletico Madrid.</p>

Just a few weeks ago, if you mentioned the name Arturo Vidal to Barcelona fans, the reaction, at best, would have been one of disappointment. His combative and energetic style had Vidal looking like a square peg trying to bludgeon a round hole.

But then it all suddenly things clicked and over the last few games, Vidal has been excellent. This is the 8th consecutive domestic title won by Vidal after spells with Juventus and Bayern Munich.

#6 Real's failure to launch, Atletico lacked staying power

For the second straight season, Barcelona’s rivals were unable to maintain a consistent and season-long challenge. Real Madrid’s league challenge failed to launch and Atletico suffered by only taking three points from Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Sevilla in 5 games.

The final gap from champions to runners up in 2017/18 was 14 points and it may be less by the end of the season. However, it doesn’t change the conclusion that Barcelona was head and shoulders above the rest.

Barca's record against the teams currently sitting 2nd through 5th was played 7, won 6, drawn 1, goals scored 19, goals allowed 7, points 19 out of a possible 21. The only blemish was a 1-1 draw against Atletico in November.

What’s next?

On Wednesday, Barcelona is at home to Liverpool in the first leg of the semi-final of the Champions League. The return match is on May 7 at Anfield, Liverpool. The winners play either Tottenham Hotspur or Ajax on June 1 at the Wanda Metropolitano, the home of Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona already has a final appearance booked. On May 25, Barcelona plays Valencia in the final of the Copa del Rey at the Estadio Benito Villamarín, in Sevilla.
